Dean Applegate, Fouder and Chairman of the Board for Cantores in Ecclesia and executive director of its annual William Byrd Festival, holds degrees from Linfield College, Colgate Rochester Divinity School, and Oxford University. Director of Music at Holy Rosary Church, a position he has held since the 1980’s, he is the founder of Cantores in Ecclesia and member of the Latin Liturgy Association and the Society for Catholic Liturgy. He studied the art of Gregorian chant under Dr. Mary Berry at Newnham College, Cambridge and with Sr. Claudia Foltz, SNJM, at Marylhurst. In 2010, the directorship of the choir was turned over to Blake Applegate, his son. His daughter, Jane, has sung with Cantores in Ecclesia since she was 6 years old and serves the Board of Directors as its Communications Officer. A convert to Catholicism while studying at Oxford, Dean Applegate has spent his career dedicated to preserving and promoting plainsong and sacred polyphony within the Latin liturgy of the Church.
